A Breathing Apparatus (BA) , also known as a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) , is a critical piece of personal protective equipment used by firefighters to breathe safely in hazardous environments.
It consists of a high-pressure air cylinder worn on the wearer's back, connected to a face mask via a regulator. The regulator reduces the cylinder pressure to breathable levels, supplying clean air on demand. An audible alarm warns the user when the air supply is running low.
Breathing apparatus is essential when working in environments filled with toxic smoke, superheated gases, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres—conditions commonly found in structure fires. By providing a portable, independent air supply, BA allows firefighters to enter and operate in immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) environments to perform rescues and suppress fires.
